Introduction

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has been issuing a series of report entitled 'Monthly

Report on Climate System' since 1987 to provide meteorological services and research

communities

with information on current situations of the climate system, which is composed of the

atmosphere, the oceans, land surface, the cryosphere and the biosphere. This report mainly

focuses on world climate, extratropical circulation, convective activity, oceanographic

conditions and snow/ice coverage with the time scale from 5-day to a decade.

JMA started to publish the 'Annual Report on Climate System' by CD-ROM since 1998.

This CD-ROM is the second issue of the annual report and entitled 'Annual Report on

Climate System 1998'. It includes the contents of 'Monthly Report on Climate System

JAN1998 乚 DEC1998' and some additional data.

The content of this CD-ROM should not be republished or transferred without permission

of JMA, and should not be used for commercial purposes. If you use any of information

from this CD-ROM, please note 'Climate Prediction Division, JMA' as the source.

How to use this CD-ROM

When you want to see sentences, figures and tables in this CD-ROM, you need a software

of 'Adobe Acrobat Reader'. If you do not have the 'Acrobat Reader', you can install it from this

CD-ROM or the web homepage of Adobe Systems (http:www.adobe.com/product/acrobat/acrobat.html) .

The way to see them by the 'Acrobat Reader' is as follows.

At first, run the 'Acrobat Reader', and select 'open file'.

1. Set the CD-ROM.

1. Open the file 'ARCS_EN.PDF', then you can see the main menu for 'Annual Report on Climate

System'.

1. Click the word you want to see.

1. When you want to see the preceding or following page, click '<' or '>' button. It is easy

to use

bookmarkers for searching your interest pages. Key words linked to related figures are colored

blue or surrounded by a blue square. When you want to go or back the link, click '>>' or '<<'

1. When you want to end, quit the 'Acrobat Reader' and remove CD-ROM from a CD-ROM drive.

This CD-ROM includes the GPV (Grid Point Value) data, CLIMAT data and so on. They are written

in ascii files. When you use data, refer to 'README.TXT' in each directory.

How to install the 'Acrobat Reader'

An install file is prepared in the `ACROBAT' directory. A format of this file is

self-uncompress format. Execute (double click) this file and follow the install menu.

For more detail of install method, refer a readme file in each directory.

The front cover figure and the figure in the main menu show a world-wide distribution

of vegetation which is based on the Global Data Sets for Land-Atmosphere Models by

International Satellite Land Surface Climatology Project (ISLSCP) and used in Global

Spectral Model of JMA.

The directory '/GPV/ATM/' contains the data for atmospheric

circulation fields.

The data for atmospheric circulation fields are derived from

the daily operational global objective analysis of the Numerical

Prediction Division, JMA. Only 12UTC data are used.

The data include monthly and pentad means for the following

elemants: geo potential height,

zonal wind velocity,

meridional wind velocity,

temperature and

dew-point depression.

For dew-point depression data, the levels are

300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 850, 925, 1000hPa and the ground surface.

For other data, the levels are

10, 20, 30, 50, 70, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 400, 500, 600,

700, 850, 925, 1000hPa and the ground surface. As for height data,

the data at the ground surface means sea level pressure.

The data are on 5X5?latitude-longitude grid.

Latitude : 37 points (90.0N, 85.0N, ... ,90.0S)

Longitude: 72 points (0.0, 5.0E, ... ,5.0W)

Each file is in the directory sorted by mean period, element and level.

Each file name consists of 8 characters, and each character

obeys the following rules.

1st character (element)

'Z' --> height (m)

sea level pressure at the surface level (hPa)

'U' --> zonal wind velocity (m/s)

'V' --> meridional wind velocity (m/s)

'T' --> temperature (C)

'D' --> dew-point depression（C)

2nd-5th characters (level)

'0010' --> 10hPa

'0100' --> 100hPa

There are 37 data blocks from the North Pole(the 1st block)

to the South Pole(the 37th block). Each block contains 8(lines)x9(rows)

data from 0E to 5W. Data for the 1st block(the North Pole) and the 37th

block(the South Pole) contain the same values, respectively.

The directory '/GMS/' contains the obsevational data by GMS(HIMAWARI).

The data for high-cloud amount are derived from 3-hourly IR data

of GMS(HIMAWARI) by Meteorological Satellite Center, JMA. The high

cloud amount is defined as the percentage of the cloud cover whose top

is higher than 400hPa level in the 1X1?grid box area. The data for TBB are

derived from 3-hourly radiation data of GMS(HIMAWARI) by Meteorological

Satellite Center, JMA.

The data for high-cloud amount are on 1X1 grid box area.

Latitude : 119 grid box areas (59.5N-58.5N, 58.5N-57.5N, ... , 58.5S-59.5S)

Longitude : 119 grid box areas (80.5E-81.5E, 81.5E-82.5E, ... , 161.5W-160.5W)

The data for TBB are on 2.5皒2.5?latitude-longitude grid box area.
